Canal Olympia to Close Its Doors in Kigali

Canal Olympia Rebero, which has been showing movies in the City of Kigali for some time, has announced that it is in its final days, as it will cease operations starting from December 28, 2025.

The management of Canal Olympia Rebero stated, “After five years of exceptional moments of togetherness we have shared, our cinema, Canal Olympia Rebero, will stop its activities on December 28, 2025.”

Information indicates that after this date, the building will continue to be used for movie screenings but under new management, and it is also said that it may be given a new name.

Available information suggests that after deciding to halt operations, the management had already put the building up for sale some time ago, although it has not yet been disclosed who has purchased it.

A journalist attempted to contact the management of Canal Olympia, but they did not answer the phone. The journalist intended to ask about the reasons for closing, the challenges they faced, and the opportunities involved in providing cinema services in Rwanda, among other issues.

Canal Olympia Rebero was inaugurated in 2021 after a long period during which Rwanda lacked a modern venue that could bring together various entertainment activities to help people relax and enjoy themselves.

The facility has seating for 300 people in a comfortable setting and screens modern films for both children and adults, in languages including French and English.

It also features a large open space for concerts that can accommodate up to 15,000 people. Canal Olympia Rebero can also host conferences and includes a unique Escape Game experience that is uncommon in Rwanda.

The construction of Canal Olympia Rebero was part of an agreement signed between Vivendi Group and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to invest in and develop a project known as the Kigali Cultural Village (KCV).
