Amrouche Reaches Out to Foreign-Based Players to Strengthen Amavubi

Rwanda national team head coach Adel Amrouche has begun efforts to reinforce Amavubi by engaging with players based abroad, as part of preparations for upcoming international competitions.

During a recent visit to Azerbaijan, Amrouche held discussions with three brothers who currently play in the country’s top football division, encouraging them to consider representing Rwanda in the future.

The players are Joy-Slayd Mickels, who plays for Karvan Yevlakh, Joy-Lance Mickels of Sabah FK, and Leroy Mickels, who features for Zira FK, the same club that also includes Rwandan defender Mutsinzi Ange.

The three players are eligible to represent Rwanda through their father, Jacques Akilimali Mickels, who is Rwandan, while their mother is Congolese. This background makes them potential additions to the national team as Rwanda looks to expand its talent pool.

Joy-Lance Mickels had previously been called up to the national team in October 2025, but he was unable to join the squad due to a rib injury that ruled him out at the time.

According to plans within the technical staff, the Mickels brothers are expected to be considered for selection during the March 2026 international window, provided all administrative and sporting requirements are met.

Amavubi concluded the year 2025 ranked 131st in the FIFA World Rankings, and the inclusion of experienced players from competitive foreign leagues is seen as a strategic move to improve the team’s overall level.

As preparations continue, Coach Amrouche remains focused on building a stronger and more competitive national side capable of delivering better results on the continental stage.
