Uganda has officially inaugurated a modern Hoima City Stadium, a key infrastructure project ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The new stadium, which has a seating capacity of 20,000 spectators, cost more than USD 130 million, equivalent to approximately RWF 189.3 billion. The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, and was attended by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, as well as other senior government officials and invited guests.
Hoima City Stadium meets international standards and was constructed on an area of 32.9 hectares. The project was executed by SUMMA, a Turkish construction company known for building major sports infrastructure in the region, including BK Arena and Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda.
In addition to the main stadium, the complex includes a training pitch and multiple sports facilities such as basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, and a parking area capable of accommodating up to 1,000 vehicles. These additions are intended to support both professional sports and community use.
Alongside the stadium, authorities also inaugurated Hoima City Arena, an indoor sports hall with a capacity of 2,000 spectators. The arena is designed to host indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball, and handball, further strengthening Hoima’s position as a growing sports hub.
Hoima City Stadium is expected to be one of the venues Uganda will use during AFCON 2027, together with the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. These facilities will play a central role in hosting matches and related tournament activities.
AFCON 2027 will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, marking the tournament’s return to the East African region after more than 50 years. The competition is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 18, 2027.
Residents of Hoima City and visitors who attended the inauguration expressed excitement and pride in hosting a stadium that will serve both national development goals and continental football ambitions.
