Sudanese giants Al Hilal have officially written to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requesting permission to move their upcoming CAF Champions League home matches from Rwanda to Libya.
The club has been using Rwanda as a temporary home due to security concerns in Sudan, but reports indicate that Al Hilal is now seeking a more cost-effective option.
High Stadium Costs Reportedly Behind the Request
Sources close to the club suggest that the major reason behind this request is the high cost of using Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
Although the newly renovated stadium meets international standards and has been hosting several foreign clubs, the rental fees and associated logistics have reportedly placed a heavy financial burden on Al Hilal.
By contrast, Libya is said to offer a more affordable hosting environment, which could help the Sudanese club manage its expenses better throughout the long and demanding Champions League campaign.
CAF Yet to Respond
As of now, Al Hilal is waiting for an official response from CAF.
The federation must evaluate whether stadiums proposed in Libya meet the required security, infrastructure, and broadcasting standards for the competition.
If approved, Al Hilal would relocate immediately and prepare to host their two crucial group-stage matches there.
CAF’s decision is expected soon, as match dates are drawing near and clubs need enough time for travel logistics and ticketing arrangements.
Upcoming Matches Affected by the Request
The fixtures Al Hilal intends to host outside Rwanda include:
- Al Hilal vs Mamelodi Sundowns – January 23, 2026
A key match between two strong contenders in the group, expected to draw high attention across the continent. - Al Hilal vs FC Lupopo – February 13, 2026
A decisive fixture that could determine Al Hilal’s position in the group standings.
Both games are crucial for the Sudanese side as they aim to advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
A Strategic Move for the Club
Moving their home base to Libya would not only help Al Hilal cut costs but also potentially place them in a more familiar North African football environment, which could provide a psychological boost when facing tough opponents.
However, the final decision rests entirely with CAF, whose approval will determine where Al Hilal will play their Champions League home matches this season.
